Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/13/07)-- Concordia needed all 45 minutes to get past St. Thomas as they slipped by the Tommies 75-70 in overtime on Saturday in Moorhead.

The Cobbers received a career-high 22 points from sophomore guard Jenna Freudenberg to come up with their third straight conference win and seventh consecutive victory over St. Thomas. CC is now 6-3 in the MIAC and 8-4 overall. UST falls to 5-4 in league play and 6-6 overall.

St. Thomas jumped on Concordia in the first half as they built up a 14-point lead with 8:18 left to play in the opening period. Perhaps the most crucial stretch of the game occurred in the final 6:16 of the first half when CC cut an 11-point Tommie lead all the way down to one point at the break by going on a 15-5 run over that span of time.

In the second half no team was able to pull away with the largest lead being five points for the Cobbers at the 4:29 mark. In the final 20 minutes of play there were eight ties including the final basket of regulation when the Tommies' Melissa Keiser hit a running jumper as time expired.

In overtime, Concordia scored 15 points, 11 of which came at the free throw line, and were able to finally get a comfortable seven-point lead with six seconds remaining in the extra session. In overtime, CC went 11-of-14 from the free throw line to seal the victory.

For the game, the Cobbers kept their win streak alive of whenever shooting better than 35.0% from the field. Concordia shot 35.9% (23-of-64) and is now 8-0 whenever reaching the 35.0% mark from the floor.

St. Thomas shot 41.1% (23-of-56) from the field and 38.9% (7-of-18) from 3-point range.  The Tommies enjoyed a 43-33 edge in rebounding and turned the ball over 20 times as compared to 23 for the Cobbers.

The biggest statistical advantage came in offensive rebounds where CC grabbed 19 offensive rebounds to the Tommies eight and turned that into a 19-9 margin in second-chance points.

Besides Freudenberg's 22 points, Concordia received a huge game from senior forward Leanne White who hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points. Annie Keeley added the other scoring punch for CC. She finished with 19 points and made several clutch free throws in the overtime period.

St. Thomas was led by the tandem of Melissa Gotchnik and Jessica Katch who both finished with 17 points. Keiser was the only other Tommie player to score in double figures. She was 2-of-3 from 3-point range and finished with 10 points.
