Gameday Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Through 25 minutes of action on Friday night, it appeared as if the Cobbers were going to wage a white-knuckle battle with Augsburg that would be decided in the final minutes of regulation. That thought quickly disappeared as the Auggies scored four more times in the middle period on their way to seven unanswered goals and a convincing 11-3 win over Concordia in the first game of their two-game series.

The game was dominated by Augsburg junior forward Critter Nagurski who scored three goals and added an assist. Nagurski's linemate, Aaron Johnson, had one goal and added an assist on each one of Nagurski's goals as the pair outscored the Cobbers 4-3.

Three different players scored for Concordia who remain winless in MIAC conference play this season. The loss drops the Cobbers' league record to 0-14-1 and they slip to 5-17-2 overall. Augsburg wins for the second straight game and improves to 4-8-3 in the MIAC and 8-13-3 overall.

After Augsburg scored a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of play, and threatened to turn the game into a blowout even earlier than it was, Concordia responded with a pair of goals to tie the game at 2-2.

Mike Vlasak scored shortly after the opening foray by the Auggies as he scored his second goal of the season on an assist from Brice Berggren. Cory Johnson's goal at 13:36 brought the teams level at 2-2 and the game stayed that way until the final seconds of the opening frame.

Nagurski turned the momentum of the game with the first of his three goals when he wrapped home a goal from the side of the net with just two seconds remaining in the period.

David Clements scored his seventh goal of the season at 2:30 of the second period to put the Auggies in control at 4-2 but then Cosmos countered and it looked as if the Cobbers would be able to trade goals with Augsburg.

That plan was quickly dashed upon the rocks as Nagurski netted his second at 5:24 and then Dan Clements added to the lead at 6:53. Johnson's goal at 13:44 blew the game wide open as the score took all of the wind out of any of the Cobber comeback sails.

Nagurski added his third at 19:04 and the rout was officially on.

The third period was marred by a pair of ugly melees. Aaron Bruggeman and David Clements were both ejected from the game after squaring off in an NHL-style fight, and then Jake Dibble and Danny Clements were given double minors for roughing and slashing with under two minutes to go in the game.

Cody Swanson scored twice in the third period and Tom Doyle added his first goal of the year to finish off the scoring and give Augsburg the eight-goal victory.

The Auggies held a decisive 44-24 edge in shots on goal. Concordia split the goaltending duties in the game. Jeremy Boniface started the game and made 19 saves in the first 25:24 of action and Mike Dowers stopped 14 shots in the final 34:36. Augsburg goalie David Nash made 21 saves to record his second win of the year.

The two teams will finish off the 2005-06 season when they play the final game of the series on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2:00pm at the Moorhead Sports Center.
