Game Recap:

ASHLAND, Wis. (11/04/06)-- Concordia used the strength of two Alec Holen goals to beat Northland 3-2 on Saturday and claim the series sweep in the opening games of the 2006-07 season for both teams. The sweep marks the second straight season that the Cobbers have started the year with a sweep over the Lumberjack.

Holen, who scored the game-winning goal with 5:07 left in the third period, was part of an offense that put up 59 shots in the game. That total is the highest single-game shot total since before the 2000-01 season.

Concordia's defense once again did a solid job of holding the Lumberjack offense in check. The Cobbers gave up only two goals in the game - the only two allowed the entire weekend. Freshman Mike Persson made the most of his first collegiate start for Concordia. He turned aside 29 shots to earn the victory.

The game didn't start out as planned for the Cobbers as they allowed a goal in the first 35 seconds of play. That goal gave the Lumberjacks their only lead of the series and it would last for only five minutes. Concordia tied the game on the first of their two power play goals when Ryan Clukey notched his first goal of the year. Holen completed the pair of first period power play goals when he scored with 8:21 remaining in the opening frame.

After a scoreless second period, the Lumberjacks tied the game with 13:05 left in the final period. That left Holen to come through with the game-winner. He tallied his second goal of the game after taking a feed from Dan Perry and Clukey and fired the puck past Northland goalie Bo Storozuk.

Holen finished the series by having a hand in all four Cobber goals. He had an assist in Friday night's game and then added two goals and an assist on Saturday. Clukey had a two-point game on Saturday to help out the cause.

For the game, Concordia outshot Northland 59-31. The game featured 27 penalties and 54 penalty minutes.

Concordia will play their home opener on Tuesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. when they host UM-Crookston in their third straight non-conference game.
