GAME STORY

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/02/08)-- Concordia shot better than 60.0% from the field and received an All-Conference performance from Luke Linz as the Cobbers downed Macalester 87-83 on Saturday in St. Paul. The win completes the season sweep for the Cobbers over the Scots and improves Concordia's conference record to 8-6 on the year. CC moves into a three-way tie for third in the league standings due to losses by Carleton and St. John's on Saturday. The Cobbers are now 9-10 overall. The Scots lose for the ninth time in the past ten games and fall to 4-9 in the MIAC and 6-12 overall.

The decisive stretch in the game came in the final nine minutes of the first half. Leading by one at 24-23, the Cobbers finished off the half by going on a 19-10 run to take a 43-33 lead at the break. In the first half, Concordia shot 67.9% (19-for-28) from the field and 83.3% (5-for-6) from 3-point range. Freshman guard Karl Olson led the charge for Concordia in the latter stages of the opening period. Olson connected for seven of his nine points in the game in the final five minutes of the opening half. During that stretch he also contributed three steals, two assists and one rebound.

The Cobbers continued their hot hand at the start of the second half. In the opening eight minutes of the final period, CC went 9-for-12 from the floor, hit on a pair of 3-point field goals and stretched their lead to 17 at 64-47. From there Macalester would slowly mount a comeback. The Scots used a 13-4 streak starting at the 8:11 mark to cut the lead all the way down five points at 75-70 with 4:47 remaining. They would get as close as four points on two occasions with the final time coming with 1:11 left in the game. CC was able to close out the Scot comeback cause with a two-point basket from Luke Linz and then a pair of made free throw attempts from Olson.

INDIVIDUAL STAT RECAP

Linz had another monster game in maroon and gold. He finished with a team-high 28 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds. For Linz it is his third double-double of the season. It marks the seventh time this season he has scored at least 20 points. The Cobbers had two other players in double figures and three more with nine points as they used a balanced scoring attack to overcome the two-headed monster of Macalester. Erik Lien returned to his earlier form by knocking down 3-of-4 shots from 3-point range. He finished with 13 points. Ryan Johnson was 5-for-6 from the floor and added 10 points. Olson, Cody Dyshaw and Darrin Olmscheid all had nine points in the game. Dyshaw was Greg Paulus-like hot in the first half and was one of the catalysts for the Cobbers' first half surge. He also had a season-high four rebounds. Olmscheid chipped in six rebounds. Olson had a career-high six assists to go along with three assists and two rebounds.

Macalester's scoring tandem of Tommy Conboy and Abe Woldeslassie scored 56 of the team's 83 points. Conboy had a game-high 30 points marking the second time this season he has put up at least 30 points. He also had nine rebounds. Woldeslassie added 26 points and a season-high eight assists.

TEAM STAT RECAP

Concordia finished the game by shooting 60.3% (35-for-58) from the field and 57.1% (8-for-14) from 3-point range. Both totals are the second best of the season - second only to the first time CC beat the Scots and shot 61.0% from the floor and 60.0% from behind the arc. It is the third time this season that the Cobbers have shot better than 60.0% from the field in a game. Concordia went 9-for-10 from the free throw line.

Concordia held a 38-18 advantage in rebounds. That is the highest rebound margin for the Cobbers this season and most since they outrebounded Hamline by 21 on Jan. 6, 2007. The one area that hurt CC against Macalester was turnovers. The Cobbers committed 21 miscues, only the fourth time all season that they have committed more than 20 turnovers in a game. The Scots had only nine turnovers in the game and used that edge to gain a 26-10 margin in points off of turnovers.

Macalester shot 50.0% (30-for-60) from the field for the game. However, the Scots' outside game proved to be their undoing as they shot a frigid 19.0% (4-for-21) from  3-point range. They were only 2-for-12 (16.7%) from behind the arc in the first half.
