Match Recap

FARGO, N.D. (3/21/10)-- Concordia won both of their matches on the weekend to even their overall record at 5-5 on the year. The Cobbers blitzed Bemidji State 7-2 in Bemidji on Friday and then returned home to edge St. Mary's 5-4 on Sunday. The win against the Cardinals also evens the team's MIAC record at 2-2.

On Friday, the Cobbers won five of the six singles matches to pick up their first road win of the year. CC opened the match with a pair of doubles wins and then got singles victories from Katie Edin, lone senior Amy Freeman, Melanie Gail, Julie Olson and Kelly Kalvoda. Gail and Olson picked up straight set wins and for Gail it was her team-leading sixth win of the season.

Concordia earned a dramatic one-match victory against St. Mary's on Sunday at Courts Plus in Fargo. The overall team match came down to the bouts at No.4 and No.6 singles. After the Cobbers won two of the three doubles matches, they needed to claim wins in the final singles matches to rally from a 4-3 deficit. Kalvoda was victorious in the most dramatic match of the day. She recovered from a 6-3 deficit in the super-set tiebreaker to win 10-7 at No.6 singles. Moments later Gail polished off the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

Gail is now 7-3 on the year and has won her last three matches. She has teamed with lone senior Amy Freeman at No.2 doubles to post a team-leading five doubles wins. The pair is 5-2 on the season and have won three straight matches.

Concordia will now have a three-week break before stepping outside to play their first home match on the East Complex Courts. CC will host St. Olaf on Apr. 10 at noon.
