Match Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/12/10)-- Concordia picked up where they left off in last year's record-setting season as they blanked Northwestern 9-0 in the opening match of 2010. The Cobbers lost only five doubles games and then rolled through all six singles matches as they beat the Eagles for the second straight season.

Concordia head coach Troy Hanestad had to juggle the starting lineup right before the start of the match after CC No.1 singles and doubles player Andrea Rognlien had to scratch because of an injury. The Cobbers wouldn't let the new doubles partnerships or shifted singles lineup stop them from getting off on the right foot.

Lone Cobber senior Amy Freeman led the team by example as she teamed with sophomore Kelly Kalvoda at No.3 doubles and came away with a decisive 8-1 win. Freeman then won 6-4, 6-2 at No.3 singles. Kalvoda was also a winner in singles play. She cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No.6 singles.

Melanie Gail recorded the most lopsided win in singles play. She wasted little time in posting the "double bagel", winning 6-0, 6-0 at No.4 singles. She was also slipped into the No.1 doubles tandem with Katie Edin and the two won 8-2. Edin was then pushed up one notch to No.1 singles and won 6-0, 6-1.

Ayah Kamel and freshman Julie Olson partnered at No.2 doubles and won 8-2. Kamel, the team's No.3 singles player last year, stepped into the No.2 singles spot on Saturday and won 6-3, 7-5. Olson won her first collegiate singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No.5 singles.

Concordia will now head to the south campus for their annual spring break trip. The Cobbers will play five matches in Orlando, Fla. from Feb. 22-27.
