Gameday Recap (Recap courtesy of Augsburg SID)

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (5/4/09)--Donald Blunt (SO, Richfield, Minn.) hit a three-run home run for Augsburg College in the first game, and Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) hit a three-run homer in the second game, as the Auggies split with Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Parade Stadium. Augsburg won the first game 10-2, while falling 9-8 to Concordia in the second game.

With the split, Augsburg (20-18 overall, 11-9 MIAC) keeps its hopes alive for its first berth in the MIAC postseason playoffs since 2005. At 11-9 in league play, Augsburg would clinch the final spot in the fourth-team postseason playoffs if Concordia (15-16 overall, 8-10 MIAC) either splits with or sweeps Carleton (18-18 overall, 10-10 MIAC) in the final MIAC doubleheader of the regular season on Tuesday (5/5) at 1 p.m. in Moorhead. If Carleton wins both games over the Cobbers, the Knights would clinch the last playoff berth.

Should Augsburg and Carleton tie at 11-9 in league play, Augsburg would have a tiebreaker advantage over Carleton based on the second tiebreaker criteria for the playoffs -- record against the three other teams in the playoffs (Augsburg is 2-4, Carleton is 1-5). Either Augsburg or Carleton would be the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, and would face conference regular-season champion St. Thomas (28-9 overall, 15-5 MIAC) in the playoff opener on Friday (5/8) at 3:30 p.m. in Dundas, Minn.

In the first game, Augsburg scored in every inning against the Cobbers, pounding out 11 hits against three Concordia pitchers. Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored for the Auggies, while Blunt went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, with a towering three-run homer to left-center in the third inning and a run-scoring grounder in the sixth.

James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) and Tom Petersen (FY, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) had two hits and an RBI each for the Auggies in the first game.

Three Auggie pitchers limited the Cobbers to just four hits in the first game, with Kristofer Ozga (SO, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) striking out three over three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Starter Jason Kickhafer (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) struck out two in the first three innings, and Mark Heise (JR, Foley, Minn.) closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

Erick Sykora (SR, Rapid City, S.D./Stevens HS) had two of the Cobbers' four hits in the first game, and Scott Schumacher (SR, Thompson, N.D.) had a double and scored a run.

In the second game, the Cobbers built a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Augsburg took the lead back with a five-run third inning, sending eight batters to the plate, with the key hit Henry's three-run homer to left-center.

Concordia tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning, with a run scoring on a wild pitch and another coming across on a single by Tony Emmerich (SO, Moorhead, Minn.). Augsburg took the lead again with a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Kolbow, but the Cobbers took the lead for good in the fifth, with two runs scoring on two wild pitches. Schumacher hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning to give the Cobbers a 9-7 advantage.

Augsburg had a chance to win the game in the seventh inning, as with runners at second and third, pinch-hitter Shea Sajevic (JR, Hastings, Minn.) hit a one-out single to left field. One run scored, but the second runner was tagged out at the plate, and a strikeout ended the game.

Concordia's Michael Carlson (SO, Sartell, Minn.) went 3-for-3 at the plate and reached base in all five of his plate appearances, adding two walks and scoring four runs. Emmerich reached base in four of his five plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Schumacher also went 2-for-3 for the Cobbers in the second game, driving in two runs.

For Augsburg, Henry went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI in the second game, and Panning went 2-for-4.
