Gameday Recap

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (5/2/09)--The glass was half full for the Cobbers against UND on Saturday in Grand Forks. Concordia pounded out 18 runs, recorded 22 hits and belted five home runs against the Fighting Sioux but wound up losing a pair, 12-11 and 11-7.

The twinbill finishes off the non-conference portion of the Cobbers' schedule for 2009. CC will now have a pair of MIAC doubleheaders on Monday and Tuesday to cap the regular season. Thanks to some fortunate results in the conference on Saturday, Concordia holds its own destiny as they now can sweep all four games and make the four-team league tournament.

The Cobbers (14-15) showcased their offense against Division I pitching. Concordia scored three times in the very first inning against UND (12-25) and then went on to add nine more runs in the second and third frames. CC took a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before giving up a touchdown and then conceding the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Cobber freshman Tony Emmerich had his best game in maroon and gold as he went 4-for-5 in the opener with two RBI and three runs scored. He also hit his fifth home run of the season. Michael Carlson also went deep for Concordia. he led off the game by jacking one over the left field fence. He finished the game by going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior third baseman Erick Sykora matched Carlson's three RBI output. Sykora went 2-for-4 and scored one run.

In the second game, Concordia scored at least one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings but it wasn't enough as the Fighting Sioux bats were just a bit hotter on the day. A pair of big innings cost Concordia in the nightcap. The Cobbers gave up four runs in the first and then three more in bottom of the fourth. The runs in the fourth were the back breakers because CC had just tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the inning.

Three different Cobber players had at least two hits in the second game. Lucas Genereaux had a team-high three hits. He went 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Emmerich hit another long ball in the finale. Kyle Johnson also went deep, extending his single-season school record to 13 home runs. He was 3-for-7 in the series and kept his slugging percentage above 1.00 for the year. Scott Schumacher continues to be the most overlooked hitter on the Cobber team. Schumacher was 2-for-4 in the second game and 3-for-8 in the series. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Concordia will find out their postseason fate beginning on Monday when they play at Augsburg at 2:30 p.m. The Cobbers will return home to face Carleton on Tuesday, May 5 at 1 p.m. Both series can be heard live on the internet.
