Women's Basketball Cobbers have inspired season

A propulsive season gave the Cobber women's basketball team a share of the conference championship with St. Mary's, Winona, Minn., and their fifth straight year at the national playoffs.

Coining off a 17-game winning streak, which began Jan. 11, the Lady Cobbers advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, where they beat St. Mary's 67-63 before losing to Bishop College of Dallas, 90-86. The women ended their 1985-86 season with an overall record of 25-3 and an MIAC record of 20-2. Coach Duane Siverson, in his second year as head coach for the women, was named MIAC Coach of the Year.

Led by seniors Cynthia Bogatzki, Bertha; Janet Peterson, Hallock, and Kim Sternhagen, Barrett, all in Minnesota, the women had an inspiring season. In their opening game, they tallied an 85-71 win over national runner-up North Dakota State University.

They also achieved a single game scoring record of 113 points against Carleton College. A highlight of their 17-game winning streak was a 95-66 win over St. Mary's, then rated third in the nation.

Siverson said, ''The depth, quickness and unity of our players was incredible, as was the tremendous leadership shown by our three seniors. Our goal was to win the conference title and we did it."

Receiving all-conference honors were Bogatzki and Peterson and sophomore Jessica Beachy of Staples. Sternhagen received honorable mention. Beachy and Peterson were also selected to the all-region team. Beachy established a single-season scoring record of 571 points.
