Concordia held off a strong challenge from Gustavus, and claimed fourth place at the 2001 MIAC Track and Field Championships. The Cobbers finished the meet with 102 points, which was three better than the fifth place Gusties. St. Thomas won the meet with a total score of 184 points.
Steve Edlund (Sr., Cyrus, Minn.) captured the 3000M Steeplechase in a time of 9:29.50, which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Division III National Meet. It is also the fifth fastest time in school history. Joe Schmidgall (Jr., Morris, Minn.) captured the High Jump with a leap of 6'7", also a provisional qualifying mark.
The Cobbers continued to shine in the throwing event where they captured a first, a second and three third place finishes in the four events. Joel Nelson (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) won the Hammer Throw with a toss of 172'2", a provisionally qualifying toss, and also finished third in the Shot Put. Sophomore Trent Hagen (Pelican Rapids, Minn.) was the runner-up in the Discus with a national provisional qualifying toss of 157'3". Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) finished third in the Javelin with a toss of 173'2", and Brad Ragan finished third in the Hammer Throw with a 148'7" mark. All of the "top three" performances earn All-Conference Honors.
The fourth place finish marks the fifth straight year Concordia has finished in the top five at the outdoor championship meet.
5/01 Comcordia Competes at the MSU-Moorhead Twilight Meet.
Concordia finally inaugurated the brand new surface on the outdoor track as they hosted the Irv Christenson Inviational. The meet, originally scheduled for April 12th, featured the three local colleges and also teams from NCAA Division II and NAIA.
The Cobbers, bolstered by the strength of their distance runners and throwers finished second behind crosstown rival MSU-Morhead. Concordia defeated Division II powers NDSU, Bemidji State and St. Cloud State.
Senior thrower Joel Nelson (Fargo, N.D.) had a terrific meet as he provsionally qualified for nationals in the hammer throw with an event- winning toss of 170' 11". Other Cobber event winners were Steve Edlund (Sr., Cyrus, MN), who won the 3000 meter steplechase and Chris Goebel (Sr., Albany, MN) who outdistanced the field in the 5000 meters.
The highlight of the meet came in the 100 meter dash as Starr Roberts, running unattached, blistered up the new surface in a time of 10.64 - in a race that featured three runners under the 10.80 mark.

4/12 Irv Christenson Invitational Has Been Postponed Due to Weather. The Irv Christenson Invitational scheduled for Thursday, April 12th has been postponed until April 25th due to impending weather conditions.
Concordia will offer an additional home meet on our track on April 25th depending on the weather. The meet will start at 4:00 p.m.

and fielders end indoor season
Joe Schmidgall (Jr., Morris, MN) cleared 6' 6" at the NCAA Division III National meet in Oshkosh, WI. to finish 12th in the event. It is the highest finish for Schmidgall at a national event. last year he placed 14th at the NCAA Outdoor Meet in the high jump.
3/6 Joe Schmidgall Qualifies for NCAA
Indoor National Meet.
Schmidgall's qualifying jump occurred at the Cobber Pentathlon and set an indoor school record. It will be the first time Schmidgall has competed at indoor nationals. Last year he qualified for outdoor nationals in the High Jump. He placed 14th at the meet with a jump of 6' 4 3/4 ".
Concordia used a strong middle and long distance corps to finish in third place at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. Chris Goebel (Sr., Albany, MN) won the 1000 and finished second in the 1500, while teammate Steve Edlund (Sr., Cyrus, MN) finished second in the 3000 and third in the 5000 to pace the Cobbers.
The third place finish marks the fourth consecutive year Concordia has finished in the top three. The Cobbers finished with 114 points which was 33 points ahead of fourth place Gustavus.
Adam Strainer (Sr., East Helena, MT) once agained claimed the title of the MIAC most all-around athlete as he finished first in the Pentathlon for the second straight year. He also finished second in the Triple Jump with a distance of 46'6 1/4" which provisionally qualifies him for the national meet.
Other Concordia highlights included John Andan's (So., Kumasi, Ghana) second place finish in the Long Jump and a sixth place finish by Jeremy Pris (So., Somers, MT) in the 55 Meter Hurdles. Joe Schmidgall (Jr., Morris, MN) finished third in the High Jump after placing fourth in the Pentathlon.
3/1 Adam Strainer Wins Second
Consecutive MIAC Pentathlon.
Concordia also placed three other athletes in the top ten in the conference. Joe Schmidgall (Jr., Morris, MN) finished fourth, Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, ND) was seventh and Justin Gall (Sr., Moorhead, MN) placed ninth. Schmidgall's score of 3,440 is the third best in school history and also a personal record.
Concordia takes the strength of their four top-ten finishes from the Pentathlon into this weekends MIAC Indoor Championship Meet at St. John's.
2/24 Concordia Survives the
Weather at the Bethel Invitational.
At the Invite held at Bethel earlier in the day, the Cobbers continued to flex their muscles in the middle distances as Steve Edlund (Sr., Cyrus, MN) won the 1500 Meters in a time of 4:07.22. Teammates Chris Goebel (Sr., Albany, MN) and Ben Nylander (Fr., Lisbon, ND) finished third and fourth.
Adam Strainer (Sr., East Helena, MT), preparing
to defend his conference Pentathlon crown next weekend, won the Triple
Jump with a mark of 45'7". Strainer also finished second in the Long
Jump with a distance of 21'8" and sixth in the High Jump at 6'1 1/4". Other
top performers for Concordia included the 4x400 Meter Relay team of Strainer,
Chastek (Jr., Glencoe, MN), Nick
Steffens (So., Aitkin, MN) and Jeff Hertel
(Sr., Fargo, ND) who finished second with a time of 3:31.36. Mark D finished
fifth in the 1000 with a time of 2:43.20, and Joe
Schmidgall (Jr., Morris, MN) and Paul
Poduska (Jr., Fort Collins, CO) tied for fourth in the High Jump at
6' 3 1/4".
2/16 The Concordian, Cobbers
rule at Concordia Dual
Concordia received stellar performances from Chris Goebel (Sr., Albany, MN) and Steve Edlund (Sr., Cyrus, MN) in the middle distances, and won four of five at the Cobber Duals. Goebel pulled a daily double as he won the 1000 and the 1500. Edlund won the 3000 in a time of 8:53.82 which places him seventh on the school's all-time list in the event. Other winners for the event were Paul Poduska (Jr., Fort Collins, CO) in the High Jump, Adam Strainer (Sr., East Helena, MT) in the Triple Jump and the Distance Medley Relay team of Edlund, Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, ND), Dave Dahlseng (Jr., Cyrus, MN) and Ben Nylander (Fr., Lisbon, ND).
Concordia defeated crosstown rival MSU-Moorhead along with Bemidji State, NDSCS and NCAA Division II opponent South Dakota State.

7/15 Former Track All-American Aaron Banks Advanced to the Finals in Qualfying for the Olympics.
Aaron Banks, a 1996
graduate of Concordia, after advancing to the finals
in the Olympic qualifying meet missed out on qualifying for the Olympics
in the shot put. Banks' throw of 59'
11" in the prelims earned him the 12th and last spot in the finals.
He then threw 59' 03" in the finals and finished 12th. Banks was a three-time
NCAA Champion at Concordia. He also added 11 All-American performances
in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.
