Track star Linda Iverson named all-American

For the first time, Concordia's women's track and field team was represented in the Division III Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Track and Field Competition, which was held at California State University at Hayward on May 21-23.

Linda Iverson of Fairview, Mont., received all-American status in Division III competition, a first for women's track and field at Concordia. She placed fourth in the javelin competition with a throw of 145-6, breaking her own record by 8-9½. This was the last meet of her collegiate career.

Carmen Moser, Kulm, N.D., placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of40-111A, and Ruth Reimnitz, Bismarck, N.D., tied for loth place in the high jump with a 5-3 jump.

Julie Bale and Margo Holm from Moorhead and Reimnitz corn peted in the long jump and Kris Freeman, Duluth, Minn , par ticipated in the shot put competition. Bale ran in the 100-meter  dash

Julie Carew, Wadena, Minn., also qualified for the national meet but couldn't participate because she was traveling on a May  Seminar

"The national meet was a great experience for all of us," said Coach Joyce Prokop. "The highlight definitely was to have Linda become the first Concordia athlete to attain all-American status  in women's track and to see her throw her personal best."

To qualify for the national meet, the team captured the state  title of the Division III Minnesota Association of Intercollegiate  Athletics for Women (MAIAW). This was another first for the team. Coach Prokop commented, "Tne state meet was a total team effort with 16 of our athletes scoring. It was a most exciting meet, with the scores running close right to the end." The meet was a three-way battle  between Concordia with 144½ points, St. Olaf with 131 and St Thomas with 121.

Julie Bale was top performer in the state meet with first place in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400 meter relay. She took second place in the medley relay, third place in the long jump and tied for sixth in the high jump.

Iverson also competed in the Drake Relays in Des Moines Iowa in her specialty, the javelin contest. She was the first Cobber to qualify for and attend the relays.
