Chapter 4 -- The Depression Years

On the starting lineup for Coach Joe Rognstad's initial football team were Ernest Carlson and Robert Nick at ends, Unite Brodin and Lester Perry at tackle, Earl Grimsrud and Floyd Misner at guards and Ralph Jenson at center. In the backfield Kermit Piltingsrud and Gene Cowles were at the halfback spots, Roy Ludwig was at quarterback and Art Ernst was the fullback. The schedule:

With a 3 - 3 overall record, the Cobbers ended 3 - 1 in the MIAC for second place. Larry Schneider and Les Perry were named to the All-Conference team. Conference standings were:

St. Thomas 1 - 1 - 1

The Concordian reported that new football uniforms and shoes were worn by the Cobbers. Coach Rognstad wanted his team to be in the "best-dressed race" with Hamline coach, Joe Hutton. He, however, did not plan on having his players shoes polished before every game as did the Hamline coach.

The 1937-1938 basketball team, under Coach Tom Scott, went 14 - 12 and 8 - 4 in the MIAC for third place. Co-captains were Art Ernst and Larry Schneider. The season's results:

The season started with five lettermen including Art Ernst, Larry Schneider, Duane Fiskum, Norm Roos and Curt Thompson. Others reporting were Harry Meyer, Ernest Carlson, Earl Haight, Lottie Kroll, Maynard Thompson, Vernon Law, Halvor Johnson and Everett Lium.

The basketball conference standings were:

Seven lettermen returned to the track team including Jerry Peterson, Otto Gunderson, Al Bonk, Larry Schneider, Harold Thornby and Duane Fiskum. On the schedule for Coach Scott and his team were the Dragon Relays, MSTC dual meet, Aberdeen Relays and the MIAC Conference meet.
