Chapter 3 Young College -- New Conference

Ole "Red" Haroldson, Football, Basketball, Baseball 1925-1930

Sixteen lettermen reported to Coach Frank Cleve for the 1929 football team. Returning lettermen included M. Anderson, Lee, Grimsrud, Thompson, Engh, J. Anderson, Dahl, Tuftness, Strand, Wambach, Falgren, Halmrast, Haroldson, F. Anderson, Shipp and Euren. New players were Kerry and Bob Fritz. Milt Grimsrud captained the team and earned Second Team All-Conference along with Marty Engh.

The season's results were:

Concordia 13 St. Mary's 13 (w by forfeit)
Concordia 0 Augsburg 6
Concordia 41 St. John's 0
Concordia 7 St. Olaf 12

The Cobbers finished with a 2 - 3 - 1 record, 1 - 2 - 1 in the MIAC. It was discovered that a St. Mary's football player had violated a conference rule, resulting in St. Mary's forfeiting all of its football games and the conference title going to St. Thomas.

Over 3,000 fans watched the NDAC football game which was also broadcast over WDAY radio.

Pop Sattre was elected vice-president of the MIAC conference.

The outlook was bright for the 1929-1930 basketball team under Coach Frank Cleve.. Prospects included five lettermen: Captain Stanford Strand, Cliff Halmrast, Lawrence Thompson, Alton Storslee and Ferdinand Anderson. Other candidates were Lee, Bjerke, Evans and Dahl.

The final record was 10 - 8, and 5 - 5 in the MIAC, placing the Cobbers in fourth place.

In January the hockey team opened practice. Five games were on the schedule -- MSTC, Fargo High School, Detroit Lakes, NDAC Frosh and NDAC Varsity. Tentative games with UND, Valley City High School and Moorhead High School were also scheduled.

It was reported in the Concordian that the alumni are clamoring for a new gym. The class of 1929 pledged $12,500 for that cause. The alumni association is backing the project. Large crowds last winter forced the college to rent the Moorhead Armory for basketball games.(22)
