Frank I. Cleve, Football, Basketball and Baseball Coach 1926-1936

Coach Frank Cleve Arrives

A short biography of Frank J. Cleve, who succeeded Fenwick Watkins in 1926, was written in the 1929 Scout.

From Spokane College, Spokane, Washington, Coach Frank J. Cleve came to Concordia College in the fall of 1926 to take up the coaching duties and to head the department of physical education. Mr. Cleve attended college at St. Olaf, Northfield, Minnesota. While at college he participated in baseball for three years, football for four, and played on the basketball varsity for three years. He has taken coaching courses at the University of Minnesota. He was voted the most valuable player in the state conference during his days at St. Olaf, besides being named on the national athletic fraternity.(16)

Fifty of Concordia's huskiest and fleetest men responded to Coach Cleve's first call for the 1926 football team. A group of veterans reported including Captain Chalky Reed, Harold Gronningen, Eugene Peltola, Milton Grimsrud, DonThompson and Ehlers. The group of veterans was bolstered by many promising freshmen and reserves. Reed, Thompson, Grimsrud and Gronningen were named as honorable mention on the MIAC All Conference team.

The team placed seventh in the MIAC with a 0 - 4 record and a 0 - 7 record overall. The scores were:

Concordia 13 Jamestown 14

Concordia 0 St. Olaf 26

Concordia 0 Gustavus 40

Concordia 0 St. John's 13

Concordia 0 Augsburg 26

Concordia 0 MSTC 12

Concordia 0 NDAC 20

The 1926-1927 basketball season started with poor prospects due to insufficient material to draw from. Most of the candidates reporting to Coach Frank Cleve were new men and though they had some ability, inexperience was evident. After a few preliminary games with teams in and around Moorhead, the varsity started their regular schedule.

On the roster were Williams, Urdahl, Haroldson, Thorson, Johnson, Kall, Edlund, Buesing, Peltola and Thompson

The season ended with a 1 - 9 overall record, 0 - 8 in the MIAC:

Concordia 10 St. Thomas 27

Concordia 23 MSTC 13

Concordia 27 St. John's 31

Concordia L Augsburg

Concordia L Augsburg

Concordia 15 St. Olaf 30

Concordia 18 Gustavus 37

Concordia 28 Gustavus 38
