Football team shares conference championship

Once again the Cobber football team earned a share of the championship in the Minnesota Intercolleglate Athletic Conference this year, finishing in a four-way tie with St. Olaf, St. John's and St. Thomas. All four teams had 6-2 conference records. For the Cobbers, the losses were to St. Thomas at Homecoming and St. John's on Parents' Day.

As coach Jim Christopherson predicted, a very balanced conference produced some exciting football this year. "My only regret," he said, "is that we (the MIAC) don't have a team in post-season playoffs, because I am sure that any of the four could win the whole works."

Five Cobbers, all Minnesotans, were named All-Conference: Dave KIug, senior from Litchfield; his brother, Jim, a sophomore; Jim Carter, senior from Wadena; Ralph Halvorson, junior  from Belgrade; and Don McCann, senior from Owatonna. Dave Klug was selected as Most Valuable and the Most Valuable Frosh was Kevin Arndt from Willmar. KIug shared honors as Most  Valuable in the MIAC wtth a player from St. Thomas.

Christopherson says next year will be a rebuilding year. "We will be very green, as we lose  17 seniors who have played on two championship teams and on two second-place finishers in their college careers."

Another Cobber - drafted to play football in NFL

Dave Klug ('80), football standout at Concordia, was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League five days before his graduation from Concordia.

A 6-foot-4, 228-pound defensive end, Klug was chosen in the fourth round and was the   95th player selected. Earlier    that day, he was telephoned by a representative of the New Orleans Saints and asked to keep his telephone line open  because they planned to draft him in the fourth round. Kansas City, however, chose    earlier than New Orleans in that round. Klug expressed some regret that he won't be joining Cobber Barry Bennett   ('78), who plays for New Orleans.

KIug was twice picked as all-conference, he was chosen a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics all-American, and twice was named to the all-district team in NAIA District 13.

He is from Litchfield, Minn., and majored in physical education and health.
