Cobbers end season in three-way tie for second

Concordia closed out a successful 1976 football season in a three-way tie for second place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). St. Olaf, St Thomas and Concordia each finished with 5-2 conference records.

St. John's succeeded in defending its title as MIAC champions for the third straight year.

Concordia compiled a 6-3 record overall. The Cobber offense gained 2,942 total yards compared to 2,262 for their opposition. Average rival yardage per game fell 75.6 short of Concordia's 326.9.

We had a successful season," Coach Jim Christopherson commented. "I was most encouraged this season by the performances of our underclassmen. This gives us a good nucleus to build on next year." (Five sophomores were in the starting lineup.)

Christopherson felt injuries played a major role in the Cobbers failing to lock in an undisputed second place in the conference. Injuries of key players hit at the end of the year when the competition was the strongest. Several of these injuries resulted in surgery.

Individual rushing leader was halfback Bob Beliveau, a sophomore from Alexandria, MN. In 176 attempts, he gained a total of 766 yards rushing. He was also the leading scorer for the season, chalking up 42 points with seven touchdowns. Second highest scorer was kicker Kurt Christensen, a sophomore from Appleton, WI, who had 20 conversions and six field goals for 38 points.

Individual passing leader was quarterback Mike Lien, a sophomore from Duluth, MN. He completed 37 of 80 attempted passes, with only three interceptions. Leading receiver was flanker Dave Grinaker, a senior from Moorhead, with 34 receptions for 432 yards gained, averaging 54 yards per game.

Junior Barry Bennett, a 245-pound tackle and a junior from North St. Paul, MN, was credited as the overall leading defensive point leader. Bennett, who has excellent pursuit and speed, is considered by Coach Christopherson to be the hardest working man on the team, and the best offensive tackle in the MIAC.

Concordia's defensive secondary picked off 21 passes with Dale Heffron, a junior from Keewatin, MN, leading with five interceptions.

Concordia was well represented on the MIAC 1976 All-Conference team. Six Cobbers who earned positions for outstanding seasonal play were: on offense - split end David Grinaker, tackle Doug Boese, a senior from Anoka, MN, and halfback Bob Beliveau; on defense - safety Dale Heffron, and linemen Barry Bennett and Randy Frisk, a senior from Motley.

Frisk was also selected by his varsity teammates as Most Valuable Player. Freshman Ken Helland, from Emmons, MN, received the Most Valuable Player honor for his performance on the junior varsity squad. The freshmen achieved a 4-1 record for the year.

Preparation for the 1977 season is already under way. Captains will be Barry Bennett, Mike Blum, a junior from Stewart. MN, and Mike Lien. Looking ahead, Christopherson said most of the defense will be returning, which is an important area in which to be strong. "But it is important, too, that we improve."

Steelers sign Cobbers' Grinaker

Wide receiver Dave Grinaker, rated by Concordia's football coach as "the finest all around athlete to compete for the Cobbers," has signed a bonus contract as a free agent with  the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Grinaker attended the National Football League club's rookie camp in May, practicing as a wide receiver. He is scheduled to report to the Steelers' main training camp in July.

In the announcement, Coach Jim Chnsto pherson said that if Grinaker had not been hampered by a knee injury during his junior year, He would have been the all-time leading pass receiver at Concordia." The 6 foot 2 185-pounder caught 36 passes for the Cobbers last season and was named to the All Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and All District 13 National Association of Intercol legiate Athletics teams.

Grinaker is the son of wrestling coach Finn Grinaker, Moorhead, MN. He graduated this spring with a bachelor's degree in mathematics.
