Cobbers vs. Royals Game Recap

Cobbers Snatch a Tie Out of the Jaws of Victory.
MOORHEAD-- With :36 remaining in the game, Concordia held a 2-0 and it looked as if the Cobbers would gain their fifth win of the season and snap their three-game losing streak with a shutout. Unfortunately for Concordia a college hockey game lasts a full 60 minutes. In the waning seconds of the game, Bethel unbelievably scored a pair of goals and snatched a sure victory away from the Cobbers. The two teams skated for an extra five minutes of overtime before finally settling for the 2-2 tie.

The tie does put a halt to Concordia's three-game skid. The Cobbers are now 3-9-1 in league play and 4-14-1 overall. Buoyed by their last-second heroics, the Royals improve their record to 2-9-2 in the MIAC and 2-12-2 overall.

Bethel opened the game the same way they finished it, by skating hard and putting pressure on the Concordia defense. The only difference in the opening period was that Cobber goalie Jenna Johnson was able to withstand the onslaught and turn aside all eight shots in the period. Concordia found their skating legs in the middle of the period and forced Bethel netminder Kelly Moriarity to make several close-range saves to preserve the shutout and send the teams into the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.

Concordia finally broke the scoreless tie in the second period when Hannah Impola took a feed from Kali Palmer on the right side of the goal and slid the puck into the open net after Moriarity had stood her ground to try and stop Palmer. For Impola, it was her fourth goal of the season. The Cobbers continued to attack the Bethel net and finished the period by outshooting the Royals 10-7.

Lindsay Czarnecki looked to add an insurance goal for Concordia when she slid the puck past Moriarity on a breakaway at 13:43 of the final period. Czarnecki made a nifty move as she drove hard from the right side and cut the puck across the face of the goal just inside the shoulder of the containing defenseman. She then cut hard to the left side of the goals and slid the puck past Moriarity for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Johnson seemed to have Bethel's number as she stopped the first 19 shots the Royals threw at the net. It was the 20th and 21st shots that sent the Cobbers home with a sour taste in their mouths. After Amy Beitzel pounded home a goal from just outside the crease with :35 remaining, Stephanie Williams scored the game-tying goal with only four ticks left on the clock.

The improbable tying goal came after Bethel gained control of the faceoff after the first goal and then skated the puck untouched into the Cobber zone. Johnson was forced to make a save on the left side of the goal and had to watch as the puck trickled behind the Concordia net. A Cobber defender gained control of the puck and mistakenly tried to clear the puck out of the zone by throwing it through the middle of the ice. A Bethel player intercepted the errant clearing pass and Williams was able to collect the puck and wrist it past Johnson who was scrambling to get back into the net.

Faced with just having been doused in the face with a bucket of ice cold water, Concordia was able to hang on through the overtime and collect the one point for the tie. Bethel had the better of the play in the extra period as they outshot Concordia 5-2.

For the game, Bethel held a 28-25 edge in shots on goal. Both teams were whistled for five penalties in the game, and both squads were unable to score on a power play. Johnson finished with 26 saves for Concordia, while Moriarity made 23 stops to push her record to 1-8-2 on the year.

The two teams will finish their series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm at the Moorhead Youth Arena.
