Cobbers vs. Wildcats Game Recap

Early Period Goals Hurt Cobbers in 3-1 Loss to St. Kate's.
ST. PAUL-- Concordia gave up a goal in the first five minutes of each period and fell 3-1 to St. Kate's in St. Paul. Despite outshooting the Wildcats 40-23, Concordia lost for the third straight time in conference play and watched their overall record slide to 1-6-0. The Wildcats improve to 2-1-0 in conference play and 2-4-0 overall.

St. Kate's started the game by getting on the board at the 3:04 mark of the opening period. Concordia held the better of the play for the rest of the period, as they outshot the Wildcats 19-7 in the first 20 minutes. St. Kate's goalie Morgan Kane turned aside all 19 shots to help the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead after the first frame.

The Wildcats continued their early-period scoring prowess by scoring just 31 seconds into the period. Concordia finally broke onto the scoreboard when Paige Stone (So., San Dimas, Calif.) netted her second goal of the year at 6:58. Brandie Dunn (Plano, Texas) was credited with her second assist of the year on the play. The Cobbers continued to pepper the St. Kate's for the following 13 minutes in the period but couldn't get the tying goal past Kane. Concordia held a 12-5 advantage in shots in the middle period.

The Wildcats scored the insurance goal at 5:03 of the final 20 minutes, completing their three-period, early-goal trifecta. For the first time in the game, St. Kate's held the advantage in shots on goal (11-9) as Concordia opened up their defensive tactics in order to find the two goals needed to tie the game.

Kane finished the game with 39 saves, while Cobber netminder Jenna Johnson (Jr., Wadena, Minn.) turned aside 20 shots in the losing effort.

Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play. Concordia was whistled for five penalties, as opposed to four for the Wildcats.

The two teams will complete their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at noon at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
