St. Mary's Dual Meet Recap

Cobbers Discover the Joy of Six As They Beat St. Mary's to Claim 6th Straight Win!
WINONA-- When you are on a roll in sports anything is possible. You have a tendency to manufacture your own good breaks and winning seems as easy as being one of the heirs to the Hilton fortune. The Concordia men's tennis team is officially on a roll and life is nothing but winners and passing shots!

The Cobbers outlasted St. Mary's 6-3 to pick up their sixth straight victory. The only other time that Concordia has posted a six-match winning string was back in 1992 when they also won six straight. The win also extracted a small amount of revenge for last year when the Cardinals turned the tides on the Cobbers and came away with a 6-3 win of their own. Concordia is now 6-3 on the year and improves their MIAC mark to 4-1. St. Mary's falls to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Concordia used a different modus operandi (m.o.) to pick up their second consecutive victory of the weekend. After the top two players on the team led the Cobbers to a 7-2 win over St. Olaf on Friday, it was the bottom four players' turn to lead the charge. Ryan Smith, William Wischer, Paul Tuchscherer and Eric Torres combined to pick up all six wins for Dave Lester's crew.

Smith and Tuchscherer paired to win their pivotal #2 doubles match 9-8. Smith then picked up his fifth straight singles win by hammering Ryan Kennedy 6-0, 6-1 at the #3 singles spot. Smith is starting to show the collegiate ranks why he was a state champion in North Dakota in high school. He has not dropped a single set in his last five matches.

Tuchscherer continued his winning singles ways by claiming his seventh win of the season.

Wischer and Eric Torres picked up their fifth doubles win of the year. The pair also won crucial singles matches. Wischer cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #4 singles and Torres scratched out a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 singles.

The best match of the day was at #1 singles where Jake Thomas dropped a super-set classic. After losing the first set 6-3 to Tyler Stevenson, he came back to claim the second set 7-6 before losing 12-10 in the tiebreaker.

Concordia will finish off their weekend by playing at NCAA Division II South Dakota State on Sunday, April 3 at 1:00pm.

The Cobbers will return home to play St. Thomas on Sunday, April 10 at 10:30am.
