Cobbers vs. Pipers Game Recap

Bingo, Baingo, Bongo! MIAC Scoring Records Fall as Concordia Rolls 5-0.
MOORHEAD-- One goal was reasonable, the other goal was so far-fetched it was even ridiculous to think about. On Wednesday, Concordia and Morgan Bain (Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) reached for the stars and pulled down both goals - as the Cobbers took one more step towards a record-breaking postseason appearance.

Concordia rolled over Hamline 5-0 to secure second place in the MIAC and lock up a home game in the semifinals of the MIAC tournament. The Cobbers will enter the conference playoffs for the second consecutive season as one of the favorites to earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs. The win pushes the team's overall record to 12-5 on the year, and ties the school record for most wins in a season. Concordia is two years removed from posting a 5-12-1 mark and finishing eighth in the conference. Concordia moves to 9-1 in the MIAC and continues to improve on their record for most conference wins in a single season.

The one goal that seemed secure before the start of the season was the MIAC record for goals and points in a single season. The goals mark stood at 15 goals in 10 league games and had stood since 1993. The point record was an unbelievable 32 points in 10 league games.

Bain turned a routine two-goal game against the Pipers into history by breaking apart the conference record book.

She has taken a solid freshman season that saw her post team highs in goals (10) and points (23) and absolutely exploded off the launching pad in her sophomore year. In 2004, Bain constantly assaulted the record book by posting multiple goal games in almost every league game. She had her first collegiate hat trick against St. Olaf, and added a career-high four goals against St. Kate's. When the vapor trail finally faded, Bain was left with standing with 17 goals and 37 points in 10 MIAC games. Unbelievably, she still has one league game left to play. The breadth of her accomplishment is truly cosmic. She has taken a mark that no one thought would be touched and blasted it into outer space.

The Cobbers controlled the play and the possession from the opening tap. Securing the middle of the field, Concordia repeatedly put the ball across the face of the Hamline goal in the opening minutes of play. The Cobbers were finally rewarded when Kelly Ping (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) knocked home her fifth goal of the season at 15:45.

After that point, the drama was whether or not Bain would etch her name in the record book. She took one step closer at the 34:00 mark when she took a pass from Amy Ravenhorst (So., Hollandale, Minn./Albert Lea HS) and like an experienced surgeon, calmly knifed the ball past Piper goalie Betsy Seal. Concordia could not add to their lead in the rest of the half and took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Bain finished her record-setting day by collecting a pass from Suzy Grabko (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) on the left wing and cutting the ball into the middle of the field. She took one touch, fired a shot into the lower right corner and her name into the history of women's soccer in the MIAC.

The Cobbers scored twice more in the half, as Ravenhorst found the net for the fourth time in 2004 and then the Cobbers were the beneficiary of a Hamline own goal at 65:21.

Concordia outshot Hamline 25-3 overall and 17-1 on goal. Ashley Liegakos (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) picked up her eighth shutout of the season by turning aside one shot. Seal made 12 saves in the losing effort.

The Cobbers will finish the regular season by playing St. Ben's on Saturday, October 30 at 1:00pm. The game has no bearing on the conference race, as the Cobbers are locked into second place and the Blazers are out of the playoff chase.

Concordia will host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday, November 3 at 2:00pm against either Carleton or St. Olaf. The Cobbers will face the winner of the Knight/Ole game on Saturday. The loser of that game is out of the playoff picture completely.

Tickets for the semifinal game on Wednesday, November 3 can be purchased through the Concordia Athletic Department (218-299-4434). Regular season passes and free student admission will not be honored for the MIAC conference tournament games.
