Cobbers vs. Royals Game Recap

Ho Hum, Cobbers Play Another Close MIAC Game!
(ST. PAUL)-- Different year, different coach - same result. The numbers on the calendar and the face behind the bench might have changed, but one thing remains the same, the Concordia men's soccer team is going to play close games when they face MIAC opponents.

In the past two seasons, the Cobbers have played 20 league games and 18 of those have either ended in a tie or been decided by a single goal. The start of the 2004 season was no exception, as Concordia and Bethel dueled for 110 minutes in a driving wind and finished the game deadlocked at 2-2.

Concordia needed the late-game heroics of Mike Tidd (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) to force overtime. Tidd's goal in the 87th minute tied the game at 2-2 and forced the teams to play 20 minutes of overtime soccer.

Both teams had chances to win the game, as the predominant factor in the game was the end-to-end wind, but neither team could break free and score the golden goal.

Bethel opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the game. The lead was short-lived as Concordia's Constant Maninga (So., Bangui, RCA/Fargo Oak Grove HS) took a through pass from Brandon Root (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) and broke free of the Royals defense to score his second goal in as many games. The goal tied the game at 1-1 in the 11th minute.

The Royals needed only four minutes to reclaim the lead, scoring their second goal of the game at 15:00.

Concordia will host perennial league power, and nationally ranked, Gustavus on Saturday at 1:00pm at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. Bethel will return to action when they host Dana College (Neb.) on Saturday at 3:30pm.
