Cobbers vs. Auggies Game Recap

GOODBYE MIAC, HELLO NCAA!!
MOORHEAD-- Once again the elements were stacked against the Concordia, and one more time the character of the new-look Cobbers shone through, as they swam past Augsburg 31-6 to claim a share of the MIAC championship and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs.

Playing in a steady downpour and on a field that had been saturated by over an inch of rain from the night before, Concordia scored the first 31 points in the game and convincingly put away their first MIAC title since 1995. The win also gives the Cobbers the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs since the only team that could tie Concordia for the title is St. Thomas, who the Cobbers beat 20-3 earlier in the year.

Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) continued to be the catalyst for the Cobber offense. The sophomore signal caller ran for two touchdowns and threw for over 150 yards in leading Concordia to the title-clinching win. Schumacher finished the game with 67 rushing yards on 16 carries. He was an economic 9-for-14 through the air and totaled 164 passing yards.

The Cobber offense racked up 415 yards in total offense. Concordia ran for 251 yards and had 164 yards through the air.

Ed Oehlers (North Branch, Minn.) and Travis Christensen (Battle Lake, Minn.) scored the other touchdowns for Concordia, marking the second straight game the senior running backs have punched through into the endzone. It was Oehlers team-leading seventh TD. He finished the game with 55 hard-nosed rushing yards on 14 carries. For Christensen it was his third TD of the year.

Senior wide receiver Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) returned to his old form against the Auggies. After being held for under 100 yards against St. John's and Bethel, Passanante tore through the Auggie defense for 164 yards on six catches. Shawn Reile (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) collected a pair of receptions and had 26 receiving yards.

Jacob Odermann (Jr., Belfield, N.D./Dickinson Trinity HS) came in for Schumacher in the third quarter and was able to run through the tired Augsburg defense. Odermann gained 69 yards on only eight carries. He also broke off the game's longest run when he scampered 49 yards late in the third quarter.

The Cobber defense put a strangle hold on the potent Augsburg running game through most of the game. Concordia limited the Auggies to only 142 yards in total offense. The Cobbers conceded only 46 yards through the air and punished the Augsburg ground game, allowing only 96 yards. It is only the second time all season that the Auggies have been held under 120 yards in rushing.

Augsburg was led by junior quarterback Marcus LeVesseur. The two-time wrestling national champion was the workhorse for the Auggie offense on the day. He had 33 carries and amassed 83 yards. He was also 9-for-21 for 46 yards in the passing department. He scored the only touchdown of the day for Augsburg when he went over from one-yard out late in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Concordia was led the linebacking trio of Doug Runke (Sr., Willmar, Minn.), Josh Dietz (Sr., Glencoe, Minn.-Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) and Ross Hebrink (Sacred Heart, Minn./R-C-W HS). Runke had six solo tackles and 10 total, while Dietz finished with seven tackles and Hebrink added six. Travis Almquist (Jr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) and Adam Cambell (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) were the rocks of the defensive line. Both players had one sack in the game. In addition, Almquist had 2.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and Cambell tracked down two runners for a loss.

Augsburg's Andrew Neumann had game highs in solo tackles (7) and overall tackles (11).

Concordia will finish the MIAC regular season on Saturday, November 6 when they play at St. Olaf at 1:00pm. If the Cobbers can beat the Oles, Concordia will clinch the title outright for the first time since 1986.

The Cobbers will finish their regular season by playing Menlo College (Cali.) in the Fargodome on Friday, November 12 at 7:30pm.
