Cobbers vs. Royals Game Recap

Roll Cobbs, Roll - Big Game Cobbers Rally to Beat Bethel 34-23!
MOORHEAD-- Concordia overcame a 14-point second quarter deficit, and the Emmitt Smith-like running of Phil Porta, to better the Royals 34-23 and remain unbeaten on the year.

For the second straight week, Cobber quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) led the offense with his running ability. Schumacher finished the game with 190 yards of rushing and two touchdowns. His 76-yard scamper with 2:36 left in the third quarter gave Concordia their first lead of the game at 28-21.

Porta tore through the Cobber defense in the first half. The sophomore running back accumulated 162 yards on 25 carries in the first two quarters. One of the turning points in the contest was when he had to leave the game with an injury in the third quarter. He finished the day with 31 attempts and 185 yards.

The Cobbers are now 6-0 in the MIAC and 7-0 overall. They need just one more win in their next two MIAC games to clinch a share of the MIAC championship and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs. The last time the Cobbers won the MIAC was in 1995 when they shared the title with St. John's.

The 7-0 start for Terry Horan's crew marks the most consecutive wins to start a season for Concordia since 1988 when the team went 8-0 and tied for the league title with Hamline.

The Cobber offense finished the day with 378 yards of total offense. For the second straight week, the team was held to under 100 yards in passing. Besides his 190 yards on the ground, Schumacher was 8-for-14 for 82 yards and one interception. Almost half of the total passing yardage for the Cobbers cam when Schumacher hooked up with Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) for a 37-yard strike in the second quarter.

Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) continued to be a force for the Cobbers in short-yardage situations. Oehlers scored another touchdown, giving him six for the year, and ran for 74 yards on 24 carries.  Passanante finished the game with five catches for 61 yards.

The Concordia defense once again won the battle of turnovers. The Cobbers came away with three interceptions on the day - returning one for a key third quarter score.

Jordan Talge (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) had his second, two-interception game of the season as he ran his first "pick" of the day 24 yards for a touchdown. The score came at a critical junction of the game. Concordia had just turned the ball over on the Bethel one-yard line after it seemed the Cobbers would push their lead to 34-21. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Bethel quarterback Ben Wetzell rolled to his right in his own end zone and proceeded to overthrew his wide receiver. Talge was in the right place at the right time and ran the ball all the way back for his first collegiate touchdown. Talge's second interception sealed the game for the Cobbers. With time winding down and the Royals behind 34-23, A.J. Parnell lofted a ball over the middle of the field and Talge stepped in to make the play.

Concordia's other interception was made by Tanner Radermacher (Jr., Bellingham, Minn./Ortonville HS). It was Radermacher's third interception in the last two games and gives him five on the season. He is one behind Talge for the team lead.

Josh Dietz (Sr., Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) led the Cobbers in tackling for the sixth time this season. He recorded six solo tackles and collected 17 total. Eric Preszler (Sr., Rapid City, S.D./Worthington (Minn.) HS) had his most productive statistical game of the season. He recorded six solo tackles and 12 all together.

Kirby Carr was the driving force behind the Bethel defense. He finished with a game-high eight solo tackles and 15 total.

Offensively, Bethel (2-3 MIAC, 3-4) was never able to mount an attack after Porta left the game. They had just three first downs in the third quarter and only 108 yards of total offense in the final two periods.

Wentzell threw for 92 yards, and finished the game 9-for-27 and two interceptions. He did throw the only touchdown pass of the game when he connected with Jesse Dick for a 35-yard touchdown strike early in the third quarter. Dick ended with a game-high 74 receiving yards on three receptions.

Concordia will host Augsburg next Saturday, October 30 at 1:00pm. If the Cobbers manage to beat the Auggies, they will clinch at least a share of the MIAC championship. Concordia will then finish off their MIAC season when they play at St. Olaf on November 6 at 1:00pm.
