Cobbers vs. Gusties Game Recap

Cobber Offense Plays Near-Perfect Second Half in 42-27 Victory Over Gustavus.
ST. PETER-- Good teams find a way to win, great teams make adjustments after having things not go their way and flourish. After Concordia's 42-27 win over Gustavus, the Cobbers are on the verge of becoming a great team.

In the first half Concordia allowed 21 points, over 100 yards of rushing and trailed 21-14 at halftime. In the second half they slammed the door shut on the Gusties to come away with the 15-point victory. The Cobbers scored 28 points in the final two quarters, outgained Gustavus 264-84 in the second half and only allowed the Gusties four first downs in the final 30 minutes of play.

Concordia remains unbeaten on the year, as they up their MIAC record to 3-0 and their overall mark to 4-0. It is the first time since the 1997 season that the Cobbers have started the year with four straight victories. Concordia started that season with six straight victories. Gustavus is still in search of their first win of the season. They drop to 0-3 in conference play and 0-4 overall.

Cobber quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) had his finest day in maroon and gold. He passed for five touchdowns and completed 24-of-32 attempts for 274 passing yards and was a perfect 9-for-9 in the second half. All three totals are career highs for Schumacher. The five passing touchdowns in one game is the most by a Cobber quarterback since before the Concordia sports information department started keeping track of individual game records in 1991. The 24 completions is the most by a Cobber quarterback in a single game since Ethan Pole completed 26 attempts against St. John's in 1996.

The receiving tandem of Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) and Shawn Reile (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) proved to be too much for the overmatched Gustavus secondary. Passanante caught two touchdowns and totaled 13 grabs for 141 yards. Reile also caught two TD's and finished the game with nine catches for 105 yards. It is the first time since the opening game of the 2000 season that Concordia has posted two receivers over 100 receiving yards.

Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) continued to lead the Concordia rushing attack. Oehlers finished with a season high 87 yards on 16 carries.

Josh Dietz (Sr., Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) and Doug Runke (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) anchored the Cobber defense. Dietz finished with a team-high 10 tackles, while Runke had eight tackles and one sack.

Concordia junior kicker Brian Halverson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had his consecutive field goal streak snapped at 12 when he missed a 31-yard attempt at the end of the first half. For the game, he was 6-for-6 on extra points and ran his team-leading point total to 36.

The Cobbers started quickly and looked to silence the Gustavus Homecoming crowd when Chris Jepson (Sr.,  Granite Falls, Minn./Yellow Medicine East HS) recovered a Gustie fumble on the opening kickoff. Five plays later, Schumacher connected on his first touchdown of the game when he hit Adam Dittberner (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) on a 14-yard strike.

Gustavus' offense was able to move the ball on the stingy Cobber defense on four of their six possessions in the first half. The Gusties used a mixture of wide-running rushers and a red-hot quarterback to total 222 yards in offense, including 107 rushing yards. They grabbed a 21-14 lead with 48 seconds left in the half and held all the momentum. Perhaps the drive of the game came after the Cobbers received the kickoff and only had 41 seconds to play. Schumacher drove the Cobbers 59 yards in eight plays and completed 5-of-6 passes. He was able to pick apart the Gustavus secondary and give the Cobber coaching staff an idea of how to attack the defense in the second half.

Concordia grabbed the game squarely by the shoulders in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. The offense drove the ball 71 yards in eight plays in the first possession of the half and tied the game on a 1-yard pass from Schumacher to Passanante. After the Concordia defense forced Gustavus to punt after three plays, Schumacher once again drove the Cobbers to the end zone. His 10-yard pass to Reile gave Concordia their first lead since the first quarter and gave the Cobbers the injection of energy they needed to finish the game.

The only hiccup for Concordia came on Concordia's third possession of the half when Schumacher fumbled and Gustavus linebacker Jared Sieling raced 25 yards for the score.

The Cobbers finished the scoring by getting to the end zone twice in the fourth quarter. Schumacher hit Reile on the third play of the fourth quarter to give Concordia a 35-27 lead, and then Jordan Talge (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) picked up a muffed snap on a field goal attempt and made the most athletic play of the game when he scrambled to avoid the Gustavus defense. After being corralled at the eight-yard line, he was able to throw a TD pass to Eric Rodel (So., Bird Island, Minn./B-O-L-D HS).

The Cobbers will return home to host Hamline on Saturday, October 9 at 1:00pm. The game will be part of the Concordia Homecoming Weekend celebration.
