Cobbers vs. Knights Game Recap

Cobbers Cruise to Family Weekend Win Over Carleton.
MOORHEAD-- Under a clear blue sky and before a robust Family Weekend crowd, Concordia scored the first 37 points of the game and cruised to their third straight victory of the season - beating Carleton 40-15.

The Cobbers used a 20-point second quarter to break the game open and remain unbeaten on the year. The 3-0 start is the best beginning for Concordia since 1997, when the Cobbers went 6-0 to start the year. For the first time in his four years as head coach, Terry Horan has guided his team to a pair of wins to open the conference season. It is also the 12th staright time that the Cobbers have beaten the Knights.

Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) scored two touchdowns, as the Cobbers scored all five touchdowns on the ground. Oehlers has now reached the end zone four times in the past two games. Carleton scored both of their touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback Darren Caspers accounted for both of the Knights scores. He threw a five-yard strike to Ben Cooprider and then ran in from two yards out with only 12 seconds remaining in the game to cap the scoring at 40-15.

Once again the Cobber defense completely derailed the opposing team's running attack. A week after holding St. Thomas to only 14 yards on the ground, Concordia's defense held the Knights to only 21 rushing yards. The Cobber front seven held Carleton running back Wade Thompson to only 11 yards on 14 carries. Thompson entered the game ranked third in the MIAC in rushing yardage per game. Concordia only allowed four first downs in the second and third quarters, holding Carleton to only 51 yards of offense in that critical stage of the game.

Overall, Concordia allowed 157 yards of total offense. It marks the third straight game that their opponent has failed to gain over 200 yards in total offense. The 15 points scored by the Knights represents the most scored on the Cobber defense all year long. Before Carleton scored in the final quarter, Concordia had not given up a touchdown in eight straight quarters of play.

The linebacking dynamic duo of Josh Dietz and Doug Runke once again proved too much for an opposing team's offensive line. Runke had a game-high 11 tackles, while Dietz put up double-digit tackle numbers for the third game this season. He finished with 10 tackles and one sack. Linemen Adam Campbell (Sr., Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) and Travis Almquist (Jr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) were each on two sacks. Concordia sacked Caspers seven times during the afternoon. That brings their season total to 14.

Carleton sophomore linebacker Randy Foss led the Knights with 10 tackles. Carleton made only one tackle behind the line of scrimmage and did not record a sack on the day.

Offensively, Concordia was led by a balanced rushing attack and a quick-strike passing force. Oehlers carried the ball 11 times and finished with 59 yards on the ground. Travis Christensen (Sr., Battle Lake, Minn./Battle Lake HS) opened the scoring for Concordia with a five-yard plunge and finished with 30 rushing yards.  Quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D./Thompson HS) had seven carries for 33 yards and scored on a 10-yard touchdown run.

After being limited to only 66 passing yards against the Tommies last week, Concordia's air corps returned to action by gaining 167 yards. Schumacher was 7-for-12 on the day and finished with 132 passing yards. Jacob Odermann (Jr., Bellfield, N.D./Dickinson Trinity HS) split time with Schumacher and went 3-for-8 and 35 yards. Like Schumacher, Odermann also had a running touchdown.

The receiving tandem of Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) and Shawn Reile (Sr., Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) did the bulk of the damage in the Carleton secondary. Passanante caught four passes for 71 yards. Reile made three catches for 67 yards.

Carleton's Mike Kootsikas was the top receiver in the game. He collected five passes and 80 receiving yards. Caspers threw 24 times for the Knights, completing 14 passes. He finished the game with 136 yards through the air.

Cobber kicker Brian Halverson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) increased his school record for consecutive field goals. Halverson, the MIAC Special teams Player of the Week last week, connected on field goal attempts of 32 and 35 yards. He is now seven-for-seven on the season and has made 12 straight field goals.

Concordia will play at Gustavus on Saturday, October 2 at 1:00pm. Carleton returns to action when they host Augsburg on Saturday at 1:00pm.
