Cobbers Sweep Into the MIAC Playoffs, Keep Title Hopes Alive.
Concordia vs. St. Mary's
Action Picture Slideshow

Series Recap -
(MOORHEAD)-- Concordia received record-setting performances from two pitchers and swept St. Mary's 4-0 and 6-1 to clinch a spot in the MIAC playoffs. It marks the second time in three years that the Cobbers have participated in the league's postseason tournament. With the two wins, Concordia improves to 14-4 in the MIAC and will host St. Thomas on Saturday, May 3 at 1:00pm for a share of the MIAC title. The Tommies are currently 14-2 in league play but will play Hamline before Saturday's showdown.

Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn./Renville County West HS) pitched the first five innings of game number one and completely shut the Cardinals offense down. He only allowed two hits and struck out four to pick up his eighth win of the year. That total breaks the old school record od seven that was set by six different players. Hinderks has now pitched 62.1 innings on the season and only allowed 18 earned runs. He lowered his team-leading earned run average to 2.60. He currently leads the MIAC in wins and is fourth in earned run average.

Derek Dormanen (Sr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) came on to pitch the final two innings of the first game and the last three innings of the nightcap to pick up saves in both games. He now has eight saves on the year which ties him with Stuart Lang for the school record in that category. Lang set the mark during the 1996 season. Dormanen continues to raise the bar on his career save record. He now has 15 career saves as a Cobber.

The Cobbers did not limit their record-setting performances to the pitching side of the game. Offensively in the first game, Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West HS) hit his ninth home run of the year which ties Chris Coste's single season mark. He is also tied Coste's career home run mark of 19. Hebrink is closing in on a third school record held by Coste. He now has 41 RBI's on the year, two shy of Coste's mark of 43 set in 1994.

The Cobbers scored single runs in the first two innings of the opener to give the team an early lead and Hinderks enough of a cushion to challenge the St. Mary's hitters. The bottom half of the Cobber batting order came through in the clutch as number five hitter Ben Kvidt (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) went 2-for-3 with a RBI and number nine hitter Jesse Barnacle was 3-for-3 and also drove in a run.

In the second game, as in the first, Concordia took control from the onset. The Cobbers scored two runs in the first and single runs in the second and third to claim a 4-0 lead after three innings. Starting pitcher Isaac Triebold (Sr., Oriska, N. Dak./Fargo South HS) only allowed the St. Mary's offense one run on three hits. He pitched the first four frames and then gave way to Dormanen to pick up the final nine outs and his eighth save of the year.

In the nightcap, it was the top half of the order's turn to carry the team. Four of the first five batters in the Cobber lineup had two hits, and together they accounted for 9 of the team's 12 hits.

Hebrink had another strong game at the plate, going 2-for-4 and picking up 4 RBI's. Dormanen went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. It is the longest streak by any Cobber this season. He currently leads Concordia in hitting with a .360 average. Hebrink raised his season mark to .331, second-best on the squad. Bryan Romsa (So., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls HS), making a rare appearance as the leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Luther Kangas (Jr., Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake HS), batting second, was 2-for-4 as well and scored two runs.

With the two wins Concordia head coach Bucky Burgau has 298 career MIAC victories. Two more wins will earn Burgau his 300th career league victory, a feat that has never been accomplished by any coach in the history of the MIAC.

Concordia has two games remaining in the regular season. Their Saturday showdown with St. Thomas will determine the regular-season conference champion and the seeding order for the MIAC tournament
which will be held on May 9-11 in Northfield.
