Wrestlers holding their own on the mats
by Kara Murray - The Concordian

With Augsburg College, the reigning national champion for Division III schools, looming in its conference, the Concordia men’s wrestling program knows the competition will be tough this year.

They also know their hard work is making them a better, more competitive team.

“We’re improving all the time,” senior Aaron Swartz said. “We are already better than last year, because more guys came out, and the guys who were here last year have gotten stronger.”

The St. Olaf open, early in the season, showed the potential the Cobbers have. Seven team members placed within the top three of their respective weight classes.

Freshman Dennis Kline jumped up to the top in the 197 weight class. Seniors Zack Schroeder at 141 and Rory Olson at 157, along with first-year Cobber Peter Benson at 174, each took second in their classes. Seniors Aaron Swartz at 133 and Ryan Smith at 149 both finished in third.

“A lot of the guys are doing extra things outside of practice to make themselves better,” Swartz said. “It gets us in even better condition.”

Last week was the busiest the Cobbers have been up to date, facing MSUM Wednesday, both Carlton and SDSU Friday and the St. Cloud Invite Saturday.

The 28-12 loss in the dual against MSUM does not show all that the Cobbers had achieved as they challenged the Division II Dragons. Rory Olson, Dennis Kline, and William Duppler all came out on top for the Cobbers in the matchup.

“The individual matches were all really close,” Swartz said. “So, if we could have won a couple more of those, it would have really changed the score.”

The dual-meet with Carleton and SDSU gave Concordia a shot of confidence. While the loss to SDSU ended 37-12, Concordia took pride in their competition against a top ten ranked division III school and in Smith’s pin at 6:15.

Carleton was especially a highlight for the weekend. The Cobbers’ 44-3 victory was a huge success, since Carleton was the only MIAC team the Cobbers have had a dual with.

“We crushed Carleton; that helped us gauge where we are in the MIAC,” Swartz said. “We totally beat them up.”

The Cobbers have met with other MIAC teams at different opens, but they are looking forward to their duals in the future. Concordia hopes to continue to improve so it can be among the top in the conference at the end of the season.
