Winning week for Concordia soccer
By Soonashir Panday - Concordian Reporter

The Concordia men’s soccer team is starting to put together another winning streak.

After putting together four shutout performances to begin their season, the team faltered for three games, allowing four goals to be scored against them. But the Cobbers have once again put together back-to-back-to-back shutout performances in as many games.

The team has outscored oppositions 27-4 in 10 outings including a 13-0 run in the last three games; the latest of which was a 4-0 victory Tuesday, Oct. 9 against Bethel College. The streak started Wednesday, Oct. 3 with a 5-0 victory against Hamline. The second win came against St. Mary’s University on Saturday, Oct. 6, 4-0.

Head soccer coach Jim Cella attributes this outstanding performance to the Cobber defense.

“We play defense and get chances to score,” Cella said. “We finished well.”

Junior Cyle Cavett, who is the center defender or sweeper for the Cobbers, said that defense isn’t the only factor in the victories. He also said that the mid-field is good and that the offense is “high powered.”

“It is fortunate that everybody plays hard this year and we are getting wins,” Cavett said.

Cavett is the leader of the Cobber defense, Cella said, and he is “really starting to come on his own.”

Concordia also has the best goalie in the league, Cella said.

Sophomore goalie Kris Overby has made 17 saves in five halves of game-time in the three shutouts.

Saturday’s game against the Cardinals also saw senior Chance Buzzell become the seventh player at Concordia to pass 50 points in his college career. He had three assists in that game, tying Concordia’s record. Freshmen Dustin Allen and junior Brandon Topp were the beneficiaries of Buzzell’s assists. Allen scored twice against the Cardinals. Buzzell also scored a goal Tuesday, which was his team-high seventh goal of the season.

Saturday also saw another milestone, but this was at the women’s game against St. Mary’s. Junior Kendra Lee reached 100 points in her college career with her second goal in the match. She is well on track to break the Concordia record, which stands at 135 points, Cella said.

The women Cobbers soccer team was victorious 3-1 against St. Mary’s University. Junior Meghan Hansen scored the third goal against the Cardinals on a 30-yard breakaway. Senior goalkeeper Kathy Braun had 10 saves in the game.

Saturday’s game was the best the women’s team has played this year, Coach Cella said.

“The team continues to get better and better,” he said.

Cella expects both the men’s and the women’s teams to finish strong. He said that now that they have gotten over key injuries, he doesn’t see any reason why they shouldn’t finish strongly.

The men’s soccer team is 4-2-0 MIAC and 7-2-0 overall. They are currently tied for second behind Macalester (5-0-0) in the MIAC race. The women are 3-3-0 MIAC and 6-6-0 overall.

Cella is optimistic about the rest of the season. “It is not how you start the race but how you finish it,” Cella said.
