Tennis team plays tough
by Tim Hanson - The Concordian

The women’s tennis team has won three games in a row since March 20.

The Cobbers (2-1, 5-1) in the match against St. Mary’s on April 6 took four-of-six matches. Concordia seniors Natalie Hausia and Danita Olson and sophomores Erica Tollefson and Jessica Strey all won in singles matches. All three doubles matches went to Concordia as well.

“Coming into the season there was a great potential for this team,” Olson said. “There were a lot of strong returning players and a couple of new ones that have benefited the team. It should be a good season.”

On April 3, in a close game, the Cobbers pulled out a 5-4 victory against MSU-Moorhead. The Cobbers also beat MSUM on March 20, 8-1.

“The team has done great, especially compared to other years,” Tollefson said. “I think we have a chance to finish near the top of the conference. I think before the season started we didn’t expect it, but now that we have seen the strides that the players have made, we do.”

In the first match against MSUM, Concordia split 3-3 in singles matches against the Dragons, but edged them out in the doubles matches winning two out of three matches to take the game.

In the second match against MSUM, the Cobbers won five out of six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches to sail for an easy victory.

“I think playing non-conference teams helps out a lot because it gives us a lot of practice, but the MIAC is definitely tougher than the non-MIAC schools that we have played,” Tollefson said.

The Cobbers only loss of the season came at the hands of Gustavus on March 17, 7-2. Gustavus was ranked seventh in the pre-season NCAA Division III poll.

In the loss, Tollefson was the lone Cobber victor in singles play, beating Gustie Ellen Anderson in three sets 4-6, 6-4 and 10-8. Anderson is the defending MIAC number one singles champion, and was ranked 13th in the nation in the preseason poll. The loss snapped Anderson’s 26-0 record in MIAC matches. Tollefson also is undefeated 6-0 in singles and doubles matches this year.

“It feels good to be undefeated,” Tollefson said. “I was really surprised, and it something I wasn’t expecting. I think that everyone is expecting me to win a little more now, but it is good pressure because it makes me work a little harder.”

In doubles, sophomore Liz Meschke and Olson were the only winners in doubles matches. It was the first time that the Gusties had lost in either singles or doubles matches in MAIC play this season.

“Gustavus has been strong team,” Olson said. “They are nationally ranked. When we played them, we got two wins out of them and so it was pretty impressive because they don’t normally lose individual games.”

The Cobbers won against SDSU on Feb. 15 and St. Olaf on March 9 before losing its only match of the season to tennis powerhouse Gustavus on March 17.

“We do have a lot of MIAC matches coming up, but we will do well because we have a strong team this year,” Olson said.

The Cobbers travel to Bethel Saturday, April 13 for a 9 a.m. match.
