What a difference a year makes.

Last year the Cobber baseball team was entering the year full of question marks. Their only all-conference player had just graduated and coach Bucky Burgau was unsure about his team's ability to put any offense on the board.

365 days later, the Cobbers are coming off a trip to the MIAC playoffs, have two returning All-MIAC players and one player who received all-region honors last season. While the foundation is in place for the Cobbers to return to the top of the MIAC, the framework will still need a little work.

Burgau enters his 24th season as head coach of the Cobbers, with a pitching staff that returns its top four starters and the top two relief pitchers. In the field, Concordia will return three players in the infield and two in the outfield. This overlap of talent should help the Cobbers continue their errorless ways in 2002 - last season the Cobbers finished in the top five in the nation in fielding percentage. On offense the Cobbers will look for junior Derek Dormanen (Jr., Menahga, Minn.) to lead the attack. Dormanen led the MIAC in hitting last season, and was named to the All-Region Team for his breakout performance. Firstbaseman Chad Felstul (Sr., Morris, Minn.) will give the Cobbers a solid 1-2 offensive punch. Felstul led the Cobbers in hits and RBI's last season and was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team.

Concordia finished 12-8 in league play last year and were hurt by their lack of non-conference game. The Cobbers played only seven games outside the league, as they saw 10 games canceled due to poor weather conditions. If the Cobbers hope to continue their string of above .500 performances in the league, the team will have to acquire the extra experience that early season games offer.

The key to Burgau's Cobbers has always been great defense and sound pitching, and the 2002 season will not be an exception. On the mound, the Cobbers return their top four starters and all are juniors. This year's starting rotation will include Dormanen, Bryan Marudas (Jr., Hinckley, Minn.), Travis Anderson (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) and Isaac Triebold (Jr., Oriska, N.Dak.). Dormanen had a solid 3.59 ERA in seven starts last season, while Marudas led the team in innings pitched, complete games and shutouts last season. Anderson is hoping that the summer and winter layoff will not affect his late-season form last year. He finished the season as the team's leader in ERA, and went 2-0 with a non-decision in his last three games in 2001. He also held opponent's to a stingy .245 batting average last year, tops on the Cobber staff. Triebold will be a strong presence as the number three or four starter. Last year he finished the season 1-0 with a 3.79 ERA.

If the starters should falter, Burgau can count on a pair of solid relievers. Last year's closer Jeremy Hinderks (So., Renville, Minn.) had a 2.96 ERA and led the team in appearances. The other known quantity for the Cobbers will be senior Justin Berg (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.). Berg led the team in saves and ERA in 2000, but slipped in 2001. He did, however, save his best for last in 2001. In the MIAC playoffs, Berg pitched an impressive 6.2 innings, and gained the victory in Concordia's opening round upset of regular-season champion St. Olaf.

Offensively, the batting lineup will be built around Dormanen and Felstul. Dormanen was only the second  Cobber to win the MIAC batting crown. His .500 league average, gave the Cobbers a tough out in the leadoff position. Felstul will be used in the number three or four spot in the lineup. The key to the Cobber's offense this season will be to find players to slot in between Dormanen and Felstul. The leading candidates appear to be Chris Siverson (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak.), who was injured all of last season but batted .328 in 27 games as a sophomore, and catcher Ben Kvidt (Jr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.). Kvidt played in 22 games last year and hit .308.

Defensively, the middle of the infield will remain intact as Dormanen will occupy the shortstop position, with senior Tim Miller (Sr. Bloomington, Minn.) anchoring second base. The two combined for nine double plays last year, and committed only 12 errors in over 220 chances. Felstul will resume his position at first base. The senior led Concordia in fielding percentage, committing only two errors in 220 chances last year. The big question mark will be at third base, where the Cobbers lost Matt Nustad ('01, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) to graduation. Nustad played in all 27 games and had only six errors during that span. Burgau will open the season with infield utility player Andy Dwyer (Sr., Bismarck, N.Dak.) at the hot corner. Dwyer played in only two games last year, and will be counted on to gain experience very quickly.

The outfield will be the team's only unknown factor. Schmidt will be back to patrol center field as the team's lone returner. Several players will be fighting for playing time. Siverson and Jesse Barnacle (So., Deer River, Minn.) look to be the favorites to open the season beside Schmidt. Both Siverson and Barnacle are coming off a year-long layoff after being injured all of last season. Siverson played in 27 games as a sophomore and led the team in 2000 in stolen bases. Ryan Hebrink (So., Sacred Heart, Minn.) will be the fourth player in the outfield rotation. Hebrink the school's starting quarterback, hit .260 in 2001 and had four home runs.

One of the areas that Burgau will have the ability to experiment will be behind the plate. Kvidt will open the year as the team's catcher. Depending on the situation, Burgau will be able to use Dormanen in the catcher spot and place sophomore Luther Kangas (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) in the shortstop slot. Kangas was the starting shortstop for Bemidji State last year. This roster mobility will give the Cobbers the necessary depth to stay fresh all the way to May.

Concordia will start the season with two doubleheaders in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. The key series will be against NCAA Division II opponent UM-Duluth. They will then travel to Florida to play nine games in the Gene Cusic Classic. The marquee matchup in Ft. Myers will be a pair of games against nationally ranked Southern Maine.

After Florida, the Cobbers will play one more doubleheader before starting league play. Concordia will find out early what the season will hold, as they open with three of the first four MIAC series on the road. The only home series in that opening stretch is against perennial league power, and preseason nationally ranked, St. Olaf. If the team can weather the early part of the MIAC schedule, then a return trip to the MIAC playoffs could very well be in the building plans.
