August 15, 2001 (Moorhead, Minn.) -- Concordia College - Moorhead athletic director Dr. Armin Pipho announced today that Arnie Caplan has been named the new head women's hockey coach. Caplan, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been an assistant coach for the University of Maine women's program. Caplan succeeds Deb Lien who resigned at the beginning of the month to take on another full-time position in a different line of work.

Caplan comes to Concordia after spending one year as the goalie coach for the NCAA Division I Maine Black Bears while also serving as a Sociology Instructor at Beal College in Bangor, Maine. Before his duties in Maine, Caplan spent a year in Japan, where he was an assistant for a women's university team at Tsukuba. In 1998-99, he was the interim head coach with the East Hants Penguins of the Maritime Junior "A" hockey league, and a head coach and general manager of the Chester Ravens in the Nova Scotia Junior "B" hockey league.

Dr. Pipho stated that , "Concordia is very pleased to have Arnie as the new women's hockey coach. He has a very extensive hockey backround that will help the program progress in the direction that Deb Lien started. " Pipho went on to say, "the selection committee was unanimous in their decision to hire Arnie Caplan. His great enthusiasm for the game and for the college-aged athletes was very evident from the first time we met."

Caplan also brings a deep backround as a player, having played junior hockey in Canada and minor professional hockey in the United Sates. He played junior hockey for the Kildonan North Stars and the Selkirk Steelers in the Manitoba Junior "A" hockey league in 1986-1988 before joining the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League in 1988. Caplan played collegiately for Acadia University from 1991-95. While at Acadia the team won the national championship in 1993. After college he played for the Daytona Beach Breakers and the Lakeland Prowlers of the Southern Hockey League before signing a 25-game tryout contract with the Saint John Flames of the American Hockey League.

Caplan graduated with honors from Acadia University with a bachelor of arts degree in Sociology in 1993. He returned to Acadia to complete his masters degree in sociology in 1996.

Along with his coaching duties, Caplan will also teach in the Health and Physical Education department and serve as assistant women's softball coach.
