Tennis teams building with wins
Kara Murray, The Concordian

The Concordia tennis teams have had successful starts to their seasons. Recent wins especially have created some confidence in these two young and inexperienced squads.

“It has been really positive,” senior Katie Carmine said. “We have a lot of really fun girls on the team.”

With only two returning players, the women’s tennis team is starting nearly fresh from last season. The women started their season slowly, losing in both of their opening matches against Gustavus and St. Olaf 9-0. It was their match against St. Mary’s, though, that brought the Cobbers their first win.

“The match against St. Mary’s was really the turning point for us,” Carmine said. “We knew it was going to be a tough match, but we hung in and won a couple of sets.”
Against St. Mary’s, the Cobbers won five singles matches and Erica Tollefson and Jessi Strey cruised in their doubles match.

The Cobbers then turned the win into a streak, with two more outstanding efforts against Bethel and the University of Minnesota Morris. Both matches were won by 6-3 scores.

Most recently, the Cobbers fell to St. Ben’s by a score of 7-2. Tollefson and Strey were again victorious in doubles action, and Tollefson was also in her singles match-up.

All-in-all, the team is making strides, and is looking forward to the rest of the season.

“We are improving with every practice and match,” Carmine said. “We anticipate a couple more wins in the conference. We know Hamline has improved from last year.”

The men’s tennis team is off to a promising start to its season as well.

The men are currently sitting on a 2-2 record.

“Things have been going really well,” sophomore Joe Amsberry said. “We are coming together as a team, [and] everyone gets along.”

The Cobbers opened their season with a 6-1 loss to St. Olaf. Erik Giga was able to defeat his opponent in singles, but the rest of the team seemed to struggle. Concordia went on the road next, traveling to Gustavus for another loss. The final tally was 7-0.

The team did not lose hope, though, and realized its potential in its next two matches, both 6-1 wins over St. Mary’s and Bethel.

“Our best match was this last one against Bethel,” Amsberry said. “Everyone played really well; we’ve won every match we have really wanted to win.”

The men and the women now both look forward to the rest of their seasons. The men will face St. Thomas this Saturday, while the women are off until April 7, when they will match up against Carleton.
