Gameday Game Recap

DULUTH, Minn. (9/16/08)-- There was going to be no need to go to overtime for the Cobber women's soccer team on Tuesday. After battling through two consecutive overtime periods, CC sophomore Sam Johnson made sure Concordia would end the game in regulation by netting a pair of goals in the second half and helping the Cobbers post a key 2-0 win over regional foe St. Scholastica in Duluth. Last year the Saints were the surprise team of the region as they earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.

The win keeps Concordia unbeaten in 2008. The Cobbers are now 4-0-3 and extend their school record unbeaten streak to start a season. The Saints lose for only the second time this season and fall to 5-2-0.

Johnson broke out of a mini slump. After scoring three goals in the first three games of the year, she was held off the board for the next three games. Like a true goalscorer, it was only a matter of time before Johnson lit up the scoreboard. Unfortunately for St. Scholastica the slump ended on Tuesday. Johnson took a cross from freshman Kelsey Swagger at hammered it into the back of the net at 53:19. She then finished off a play from Susan Obermiller 23 minutes later to give CC a two-goal advantage.

One goal would all the CC defense would need as they held the Saints without a shot on goal and only seven total shots in the game. Senior goalie Britt Reiersgord was the recipient of the air-tight defense as she picked up her fourth shutout of the season. The bagel also added to her career school record total of 32 blankings.

The two teams went through a scoreless first half and it looked as if Concordia would once again be headed to an even overtime battle. That is when Johnson and the Cobber offense stepped up their charge. CC posted a pair of shots on net in the first five minutes of play in the second period before Johnson headed home the eventual game winner. Concordia kept up the pressure and put more shots on target before Johnson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year at 76:37.

In the end, CC outshot the Saints 15-7 in overall shots and 10-0 in shots on goal. There was only one corner kick taken in the game. The Cobbers had a 1-0 edge in corners.

Concordia will step back into conference play when they host Carleton on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
