2007 Cobber Women's Soccer - Game Recaps
Concordia attackers push forward to get a shot on net during the team's 2-1 win over St. Kate's. CC freshman Sam Johnson (#9) made the shot on goal that eventually was cleared away by No.3 for CSC. The ball was ruled to have not crossed the line and was therefore not allowed as a goal. (Photo courtesy of Lee Reiersgord)

Gameday Game Recap:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/26/07)-- Concordia needed a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to overcome St. Kate's and post their third win in league play. The Cobbers scored a goal in each half to stay undefeated in the MIAC at 3-0-1. CC is now 5-2-1 overall and has won its last three games. The loss keeps the Wildcats still searching for their first win in the conference. CSC slides to 0-3-1 in the MIAC. Overall, they fall to 3-4-1.

The biggest news in the game came in the first half when the Wildcats  snapped Concordia first-half shutout streak. The Cobbers entered the game without allowing a goal in the first half of play all season and for the past 377:29. The streak would extend past the 400-minute mark before St. Kate's finally scored at the 29:40 mark of the opening period. The final total on the first-half scoreless streak came to 407:09.

Concordia was able to control the play by forcing the ball wide and serving ball after ball into the St. Kate's penalty area. The Wildcats, content on sitting back and playing a more defensive style, were able to clear the CC crossing attempts away from danger. The Cobbers got on the board in the first ten minutes of play when Cobber freshman Sam Johnson finished off a back header from center midfielder Maia Iniesta.

The Wildcats would answer less than 20 minutes later when they scored on a corner kick at the 29:40 mark. Sara Pattison was credited with the goal after she headed home the cross directly from Brittany Bernsten's corner kick service.

The half would end with the score tied at 1-1 but the Cobbers held the edge on the score sheet. CC outshot CSC 10-5 in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

The lone goal of the second period came on a penalty kick after Cobber forward Susan Obermiller was brought down in the St. Kate's penalty area after making a run around the outside of the Wildcat defense. Senior Rachel Lewis calmly stepped up and buried the subsequent penalty shot into the side of the Wildcat goal. For Lewis it was her third goal in as many games. She has now scored four goals on the season and CC has won every game that she has scored a goal.

The Cobber defense would make the one-goal advantage stand up for the final 18 minutes. In the end, Concordia had an 18-10 advantage in overall shots and a 16-9 edge in shots on goal. CC also had six corner kicks to the Wildcats' four.

Concordia goalie Britt Reiersgord was given eight saves in the game and earned her fourth win of the season. She now has 31 career victories which is a program record for victories in a career. St. Kate's keeper Elizabeth Schreiner made 14 saves in the losing effort.

The Cobbers return to action when they host St. Mary's on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. The game will feature live statistics which can be accessed on the Cobber athletics website.
