Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/13/08)-- For the second straight conference game to open the 2008 MIAC season, Concordia allowed three goals to a league opponent, couldn't find the way to scoring a goal of their own and lost 3-0. On Sunday, the Cobbers gave up an identical score line as their conference opener, allowing a pair of goals less than 12 minutes apart in the first half and then one more in the second period and lost 3-0 to defending MIAC co-champion Gustavus.

The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers who fall to 3-3-0 on the season. The Gusties win their conference opener and improve to 4-1-0 overall.

The 3-0 score line once again fails to represent Concordia's improved play in the flow of the play. The Cobbers were able to go back-and-forth with one of the top teams in the league. Unfortunately for CC the Gusties were very economical in their scoring touch in the first half. They had four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes and scored twice. The first goal came at 13:19 when Bret Vander Streek headed home a Fraser Horton cross that caught CC goalie Mads Scmidt off guard. GAC would add their second goal a little more than three minutes later. Vander Streek set up the goal by delivering a ball into the six-yard box after receiving a pass from Max Malmquist. Vander Streek's pass on the ground was met by Ben Eriksson who slid the ball under Schmidt.

One of the biggest turning points in the game came late in the first half when Concordia started to press the Gustavus defense and had the ball inside the GAC penalty area on repeated opportunities. The best chance during that drive came off the head of Cobber freshman Riley McGlynn. CC had a shot blocked near the goal and the ball caromed outside the box where it was then driven into the penalty area where McGlynn headed the ball towards the top part of the net. Gustavus goalie Steve Lundberg came up with the save of the game as he leaped backwards and touched the ball over the crossbar.

The teams would head into the break with Gustavus holding the 2-0 lead. That wouldn't change until the final 10 minutes of the game. That's when GAC netted their third goal of the game. A cross from the left side of the field traveled through a pack of players near the front post and was then met at the back post by a CC defender who accidentally knocked the ball into the net.

The second best chance for Concordia in the game came with 3:15 to play in the game. Freshman Felix Okoth got behind the Gustavus defense inside the penalty area. Unfortunately his breakaway shot sailed over the top of the net and Lundberg was able to preserve his first career shutout.

Gustavus outshot Concordia 15-9 in overall shots for the game. Both teams had six shots in the first half. The Gusties held a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. Schmidt made a season-high seven saves for CC. Lundberg made two saves to earn his first collegiate win.

The Cobbers will play a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at St. Scholastica at 2 p.m. and will then return to MIAC action on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Carleton at 2 p.m.
