- SJU Spring Invite Final Results

Meet Recap

MONTICELLO, Minn. (4/25/10)-- Concordia finished off the defense for their case of making the NCAA National Tournament by firing an 882 over three rounds at the St. John's Spring Invitational and finishing in second place. The Cobbers beat fellow national tourney hopefuls UW-Eau Claire, St. Thomas and Gustavus on their way to their most impressive finish of the year.

The Cobbers have now posted a first-place finish and a runner-up finish in their two spring tournaments of the year and will now wait until Sunday, May 2 to see if they earn one of the eight at-large bids into the NCAA National Championship Meet held on May 11-14 at the Hershey Links and Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.

Concordia waited until the final day of the St. John's Invite to go lights out. Heading into the final two rounds played at the Monticello Country Club, the Cobbers were in sixth place and trailed regional rivals UW-Eau Claire by seven strokes and St. Thomas by four shots. CC matched the Bluegolds and Tommies in the second round, the first of the day on Sunday, and then blew past both teams by firing a 288 in the third, and final, round. The 288 is the second-best team score of the 2009-10 season for Concordia and the 882 final total is the best three-round tally of the year.

Pat Deitz once again led the way for the Cobbers. Deitz led the CC third-round charge as he blistered his way to a 69 in the final round. That score tied for the lowest single-round total of the tournament. Deitz finished with a three-over-par score of 217 and was tied for fourth place.

Junior Zach Kappes posted his most consistent tournament of the year as he shot three scores in the low 70's and finished one shot back of Deitz at 218. His 73-73-72 tournament scoring was good for sixth place - his top finish in a three-round tournament in his collegiate career.

Andrew Whitchurch had the most interesting scoring total of the team. He shot one round in the 80's, one in the 70's and his final round of 69 propelled him all the way to a tie for 16th place. He started the tournament in a tie for 51st place after carding a first-round score of 80.

After the Cobber top 3, super senior Erik Weiss shot a 229 (78-72-79) and Tyler Champ was one shot behind with a 230 (7973-78). Jordie Siverson stumbled in the third round. After posting rounds of 79 and 74, he ballooned to an 87 in the last round.
