Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/11/08)-- No.23-ranked Concordia gave up a touchdown on the very first play of the game and then another at the start of the fourth quarter and lost to St. Thomas 14-13 in Moorhead on Saturday. The loss drops the Cobbers from the ranks of the unbeaten in the MIAC. CC is now 2-1 in league play and 3-2 overall. The Tommies improve to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.

The game hinged on three plays. The first decisive play was the extra point attempt after the Cobbers scored the go-ahead touchdown in the second quarter. St. Thomas was able to break through in the middle of the line and blocked the extra point. The second play came midway through the third quarter. With CC milking a 13-7 lead, Concordia faced third-and-six at their own 31-yard-line. The Cobbers faked a counter into the right side of the line and CC quarterback Jesse Nelson rolled towards the left sideline. The UST secondary completely bit on the fake counter and left the near side of the field wide open.  Nelson rolled left and tried to connect on a pass to a completely wide open Paul Shol. Unfortunately for Concordia Nelson's pass sailed over the top of a leaping Shol and a potential "nail in the coffin" touchdown went a-begging. The third, and final, key play was with 4:22 remaining in the game. Concordia lined up for a potential game-winning field goal. However, the ball slipped out of the hold on the wet field and kicker Carl Hauser had to kick a ball that was laying flat on the ground. His attempt sailed into the legs of the lineman and that would be the last time the Cobbers would have possession of the ball.

Concordia outgained the Tommies 359-320 in total offense. The Cobber ground game etched out 293 of the 359 total yards. CC senior running back Cory Johnson had another stellar game. He ran for a game-high 180 yards on 20 carries. He also had one of the team's two scores on the day. Nelson ran for 62 yards and was 6-for-15 for 66 yards through the air.

St. Thomas was led by their sophomore running back Ben Wartman. Wartman carried the ball 29 times and had 122 rushing yards. Quarterback David Sauer was 13-for-22 for 202 yards. Another key for the Tommies came in the turnover department. UST did not turn the ball over the entire game and benefitted from two ill-time Cobber miscues.

Defensively Concordia was led by a pair of defensive backs. Andrew Larson led all players with 9.5 tackles on the day. Fellow junior Levi Pole added 8.0 tackles. Jay Thoreson had one of the two Concordia sacks on the day and finished with 5.0 total tackles and 2.0 tackles for a loss. The Tommies had only one player with more than 7.0 tackles on the day. Linebacker Tony Danna had 9.0 tackles and 1.0 tackles for a loss. Kirk Baglien came up with an interception after the ball bounced off a Concordia wide receiver's chest and Bryan Villar came up with the only fumble recovery of the day.

Concordia will try and rebound against Augsburg next Saturday. The Cobbers will play at Augsburg on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. in a match-up of teams that have one loss in the conference.
