Gendered Performance

Megan Orcholski

This course is designed to develop an understanding of gender, specifically how it is performed, communicated and expressed in the world around us. We will explore the performance of gender in both traditional social contexts-such as theater, film, advertisements, and news media- and through a more critical lens of how gender is “performed” through everyday life communication. Basic theories and principles of communication will be learned as they relate to gender. Additionally, this course will allow you to begin viewing the world through a gendered lens. You will explore, react and struggle with how gender is constructed, perceived, communicated, performed, controlled, suppressed and oppressed. This will work to broaden your understanding of how gender is at work in the venues that we commonly interact with and see. WC
