Madness and Genius in German Literature and Film

Stephen Grollman

German fiction and film abound with madmen, geniuses and, of course, mad geniuses. In this course, we will explore some of the most fascinating and influential literary and cinematic depictions of “extraordinary” and “abnormal” individuals from the German-speaking world. Books will include Hoffman’s tales, Bertolt Brecht’s Life of Galileo, and Patrick Süsskind’s contemporary crime novel Perfume, while films will range from early expressionist silent film to contemporary drama. All works will be covered in English translation. WC
