The Magic World of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales

Milda Halvorson

This Inquiry Seminar is dedicated to exploration of the magical fairy tale landscape created by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. His stories, such as "The Ugly Duckling", "The Little Mermaid", and "Emperor's New Clothes" are known and admired by children and adults around the globe. They are not only beautiful and entertaining, but also raise important moral and social issues relevant for us today, like challenges to fit into a social group, gender identity, political corruption, conditions of the poor, and many others. Can fantasy and magical imagination help create solutions to these problems? What roles does magic and enchantment play in our everyday lives? These are some of the questions that this Seminar tries to answer. OC
